Drawing on his vast experience of motor racing, renowned engineer Frédéric Vasseur founded Spark Racing Technology (SRT) in October 2012 to develop hybrid and electric powertrains.

This followed the creation of Formula E, a new Fia-sanctioned championship in which electric-powered cars will compete at the heart of the world's biggest cities, including Los Angeles, Beijing and London. Spark Racing Technology’s first challenge will be to deliver the 40 Spark-Renault SRT_01E single-seaters ordered by series organisers, Formula E Holdings (FEH).

“ With carbon-based fuel resources dwindling, we must find new and innovative ways to power the world’s vehicles. Motoring enjoyed tremendous growth and development during the 20th century, but today it is often attacked for its large carbon footprint and negative impact on the environment.

Fine-tuning existing models is no longer sufficient. We must think outside the box to make the automotive industry less reliant on fuel and more environmentally friendly.

“These are the issues that Spark Racing Technology is willing to address. Car manufacturers are increasingly turning to hybrid technology by combining traditional petrol engines with electric motors. SRT has endeavoured to take the next step with its Spark-Renault SRT_01E, the world’s first fully electric racing car.

“This will allow us to assume a leading role in the burgeoning electric powertrain market.

“Spark Racing Technology is the official supplier of all 10 teams contesting the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship. The series will enable Spark to showcase its electric motoring expertise, including battery and gearbox technologies, on a worldwide platform.

“While currently fully focused on Formula E, we will soon transfer our highly-specialised skills to other projects. Encompassing everything from road cars to the aviation industry, the future offers a wide range of attractive prospects.

“I am immensely proud of what Spark Racing Technology has achieved. Talent, commitment and innovation have enabled us to become worldleaders in manufacturing electric race cars. We’re now ready to embrace the future with great determination and ambition.”
